General Surgery – Ms Angela Sultana
General surgery is the branch of surgery which focuses on the abdominal contents, including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland.
General surgeons therefore treat many abdominal conditions, and perform a variety of surgeries. These also include endoscopy services whereby a tiny video camera on a thin tube is inserted into the body to visualise specific organs.
Among the many areas covered by general surgery, there is colorectal surgery, which involves the large intestine and the rectum. In these cases, surgeons deal with malignant conditions, where cancer needs surgical removal, and benign, or less harmful, conditions, such as hernias, haemorrhoids and harmless lumps.
Similarly, general surgeons also perform upper gastro-intestinal surgery, dealing with diseases of the oesophagus, the stomach, duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and the pancreas. As in other areas, disorders of the upper gastro-intestinal tract may be grouped into malignant causes, involving cancerous growth of the organs in questions, as well as more benign conditions, such as stomach ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and hyper-acidity.
Gallbladder disease may also require surgical intervention, especially in situations whereby a stone hinders the passage of bile from the gallbladder through the bile duct and into the small intestine. Biliary obstruction is known to cause severe upper abdominal pain, localised to the right, just below the liver border, and in certain situations may necessitate acute surgical care.
Similar acute scenarios include perforation of a gastro-intestinal organ or bowel obstruction, conditions which require immediate diagnosis and prompt surgical management.
At The Professional Services Centre, we strive to combine all these services under one roof. With a team of dedicated specialists, with professional interest in each of these categories, we aim to offer you a calm and confidential environment whereby you may discuss your concerns.
A typical surgical consultation involves discussion on your particular complaint, followed by a general examination. Tests may be requested, including routine blood tests, and also a number of more specialised serological assays. Imaging is a cornerstone in holistic surgical care, allowing your surgeon to visualise the organ in question prior to performing the surgery.
Management ultimately entails watchful waiting, known as conservative treatment, or surgical interventions. In this regard, laparoscopic surgery has become an important tool in the surgeon’s arsenal, allowing the organ in question to be approach through key-holes in the abdomen, thus hastening patient recovery and decreasing pain and discomfort.
