Urology and Male Infertility – Mr Andrew Mercieca

Urology is the branch of surgery dealing with the treatment of conditions involving the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. People specializing in the field of urology are called urologists, healthcare professionals who are trained to diagnose, detect and treat this group of disorders and diseases.

Common urological disorders include those affecting all parts of the urinary tract system, from the kidneys, down to the ureters (the tubes connecting the kidney to the bladder), the bladder, and the urethra, the passage allowing urine out of the body. Adrenal gland pathology also falls under the remit of the urologist, along with the male reproductive organs.

Urology, as a scientific field, therefore deals with the ailments affecting all these organs, be it through surgical means, but also through the prescription of medicine to treat pathologies affecting the urinary tract and the prostate. Common pathologies in this regard include urinary tract infections, especially those needing specialised care, and benign prostatic hypertrophy, which affects many males above 70 years of age, causing considerable distress.

Urologists also work in conjunction with a multitude of other specialists, including radiotherapists and oncologists. This is especially true when treating cancers of the urinary tract. Similarly, from a medical point of view, urologists work hand-in-hand with nephrologists to provide holistic care to patients suffering from chronic disease of the urinary tract, and who may possibly require surgical intervention, such as in the case of renal transplant patients.

Of particular relevance is the support and care which urologists may offer to couples suffering from male-factor infertility. We understand the distress which such couples are going through and, through our dedicated urologists, we offer a confidential environment whereby such problems may be tackled constructively.
