Allergy vs Intolerance

Allergy vs Intolerance: What’s the Difference?

It’s common to label many reactions as “allergies”, but allergy and intolerance are different conditions and should be managed differently.

Food allergy

  • Involves the immune system
  • Can occur rapidly after exposure
  • May include hives, swelling, breathing symptoms
  • In severe cases, can be life-threatening

Food intolerance

  • Often digestive (bloating, discomfort)
  • Does not typically involve immune reactions
  • Not usually life-threatening

Why correct diagnosis matters

  • Avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions
  • Identify genuine risk and appropriate safety advice
  • Choose the right management plan
