Allergy vs Intolerance: What’s the Difference?
It’s common to label many reactions as “allergies”, but allergy and intolerance are different conditions and should be managed differently.
Food allergy
- Involves the immune system
- Can occur rapidly after exposure
- May include hives, swelling, breathing symptoms
- In severe cases, can be life-threatening
Food intolerance
- Often digestive (bloating, discomfort)
- Does not typically involve immune reactions
- Not usually life-threatening
Why correct diagnosis matters
- Avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions
- Identify genuine risk and appropriate safety advice
- Choose the right management plan
